April 13, 2018 – -Paul Ryan announced this week that he will not seek re-election and thus will surrender the speakership in January and has endorsed House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) to replace him as Speaker. McCarthy’s only rival at this point appears to be House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
McCarthy was the leading candidate for speaker in October 2015 when John Boehner retired from Congress, but the hyper-conservative House Freedom Caucus threatened to block him unless McCarthy supported their choice for a new majority leader. McCarthy pulled out of the running.
Of course, McCarthy’s possible bid to be Speaker is contingent on whether the Republican maintain their current hold on the House majority. The November 2018 midterm elections will determine which party has control of the House and the ability to elect a Speaker.
